We began by focusing on form and proportion, sketching letterforms on paper with reference to classic Tamizh scripts and typefaces such as Aksharaya. Over a week and a half of brush-and-ink studies, I closely observed the weights, contrasts, and finer nuances of each form.

The initial construction was done in Glyphs, using the original drawings as a reference. The forms were refined over time through repeated printing and close critique, examining every detail to learn and improve each aspect of the letterforms.

POOMPUHAR
Poompuhar was a classroom project in which we set out to observe and study the calligraphic strokes of a language with an Indic script. The brief of the project was to understand the various visual constraints involved in the development of a typeface and, ultimately, to construct the letters in the name of a city in the previously studied script as part of a typeface, with constraints generated and assigned at random. The letters were first physically drawn, refined through multiple iterations, and then digitized as vectors.
