Loosely Speaking
This is the first piece in an ongoing series exploring semantics-based propaganda through type — how individual words get repurposed over time until they carry different meanings. This installment is a typographic exploration playing on the word "woke" and its semantics. Its drift is well-documented, fast, and bidirectional — both reclaimed and weaponized by different groups. This is grounded in linguistic theories of semantic bleaching and pejoration, and in Victor Klemperer's account of language reshaped through repetition.
