The brief was to design a logomark for an existing or hypothetical brand that remains faithful to the brand’s core qualities while establishing visual consistency and recognisability.
Initial concepts were first explored through hand-drawn sketches, beginning with the simplest and most intuitive ideas before progressing to more considered and refined solutions. The final symbol is a type-driven exploration of the Tamil letterform “மு” (mu), playing with circularity and composition, drawing from the flowing and overlapping visual rhythm of forms, textures, and flavours typical of this cuisine.
The catalyst for the new identity stems from the visual language of past logos, which often depicted the idli literally. In developing the symbol, it was important to be mindful of stereotypical depiction. Often, brands within or inspired by South Asian visual culture fall into the habit of borrowing cultural motifs indiscriminately, overloading the visual language even when it bears no relation to the brand or its offerings. This identity deliberately moves away from such clichés, offering a type-driven exploration of the Tamil letterform “மு” (mu). Circular shapes recur throughout the cuisine, from the idli itself to the serving dishes and the way food spreads across the banana leaf. The symbol’s overlapping and flowing forms capture the sensory rhythm of a typical meal in this culinary landscape, where it is all about letting different elements run over and into one another. The palette is reminiscent of the colours you experience while eating here. Together, these choices create a visual identity that is grounded, expressive, and attuned to the essence of the Murugan Idli Shop experience.
